What can I drink before a colonoscopy?
Patients often ask, 'Can I drink .......before a colonoscopy?' Bowel preparation is taken prior to colonoscopy to empty the colon (large bowel) ensuring a clear view
at the time of the examination. The commonly used bowel preparations encourage plenty of clear fluids in the few days prior to colonoscopy.
Clear fluids includes all of the following
- All types of water
- Lucozade and any other 'sports drinks'
- Black tea and coffee, this includes fruit and herbal teas
- Fizzy drinks e.g. coke, ginger beer, tonic water
- Clear fruit juice such as apple, cranberry, pomegranate, red and white grape juice
- Any fruit squash
- Hot honey and lemon
- Oxo, Marmite, Bovril
- Consomme (clear soup)
Please do not have orange juice of other fruit juices that are not clear.
Please do not have milk based drinks such as milkshakes and cappuccino or fruit smoothies.
Drinking plenty of clear fluids improves the quality of the bowel preparation which is important for the quality and safety of the procedure. Maintaining good hydration also helps to
prevent dehydration which can sometimes occur as a result of the bowel preparation.
On the day of your examination continue to drink clear fluids until 2 hours before the procedure. You should then remain nil
by mouth until your procedure.
