Dr Reuben Ayres DM FRCP was born in London and educated at the Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School.
He graduated from Southampton University in 1982 and worked in junior
hospital posts in Southampton, Portsmouth & Bournemouth before moving to the Birmingham
Liver Unit to write his DM thesis. He completed his higher specialist training in
Gastroenterology and General Medicine in Birmingham before being appointed Consultant
Gastroenterologist & Physician to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital
(now Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust
Dr Ayres maintains a busy clinical gastroenterological practice with an interest in both
luminal bowel disease and hepatology.
Dr Ayres is currently Lead Clinician for the Department of Gastroenterology at the Royal Devon &
Exeter NHS Foundation Trust
), Service Director of the Exeter, North, Mid & East Devon Bowel Cancer Screening Service, part of the
NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme
and a colon cancer screening colonoscopist for the service. He is also a member of the medical panel of the
Behcet's Syndrome Society
and a trained mentor for the
South West Peninsula Deanery
Mentoring Programme for Specialty Trainees and Foundation Doctors.
